    As physically active pupils, our INTENT is:

    Through PE we aim to encourage a lifetime love of sport and keeping fit. We will develop children’s skills in a range of activities within games, gymnastics and dance. This will give opportunities to practise and progress across our four golden threads: teamwork; catching and passing a ball; balance, agility and co-ordination; applying tactics to a game.

    Through PE lessons and other sporting activities, children will be able to express themselves creatively and develop confidence. They will also have opportunities to work alongside peers and other year groups, such as Sports Day and intra-school competitions, to develop respect and teamwork skills, linking closely with our school value of Fellowship.

    To support cross-curricular learning, we will look for possibilities of linking PE to themes and topics in other subjects, enriching pupils’ understanding and experiences.

    To ensure progression and high achievement in PE, we will create a well-sequenced curriculum that builds on prior learning and supports individual growth.

    Leadership skills are an important life skill and will be developed within lessons and in the role of a Sports Leader.

    We will create ways to celebrate all aspects of physical activity, both within PE lessons, clubs, intra and inter competitions and sports outside of school.

    Our aim is for pupils to enjoy their physical education offer and have a voice in what is being offered to them so they fully engage and participate.

    And we IMPLEMENT this by:

    PE in KS1 and EYFS will begin by learning the fundamental skills. They will be taught units in dance, gymnastics and games skills such as sending and receiving and ball skills.

    There will be lots of opportunities for creativity, teamwork, evaluating and fun.

    Moving on to KS2, children will then start applying the fundamental skills to sport specific games, such as cricket or netball. Each unit of work will follow the basic structure of:

    • Introduce game/sport
    • Learn technical skills
    • Teach rules (if applicable)
    • Apply knowledge and skills
    • Review/evaluate
    • Assess

    We use Get Set 4 PE, which provides a clear and progressive curriculum that is followed from EYFS to Year 6, building on prior skills and knowledge each year. PE is timetabled and taught for an hour two times per week, making cross-curricular links where meaningful.

    Pupils are taught a wide range of PE skills, starting with fundamentals and basic skills and moving up to applying these skills to specific sports in KS2. Skills are explicitly taught, practised, and refined over time, with increasing levels of independence and complexity.

    Pupils come to school in PE kit on PE days to support children in accessing every lesson and not wasting time changing. Pupils are taught to evaluate and give feedback on their own and other’s performance to help each other progress. Opportunities are provided to allow children to work with other year groups – Sports Day and intra-school competitions.Resources are checked and maintained to ensure that all of our PE curriculum can be taught fully and ensure children achieve best possible outcomes.

    In order to provide equality of opportunity in PE, planning is adapted and well thought out so that all children can access the lesson. Where appropriate, activities may be varied or different resources provided to support children with different needs.

    As a result, our pupils will develop confidence, creativity, and resilience throughout the PE curriculum, becoming independent and reflective learners.

    Children will be able to apply the basic fundamental skills taught in KS1 to specific sports taught in KS2. Children have access to a broad curriculum, experiencing many sports, skills and opportunities throughout their time at St Alban’s. Progression is evident in observations across the year groups and through pupil voice, when talking about PE.

    Pupils are able to discuss and evaluate their own and others performance using appropriate vocabulary, showing critical awareness and pride in their achievements. Pupils will enjoy sharing their sporting achievements, with the aim of also encouraging others to be involved in sport too. PE contributes positively to pupils’ emotional wellbeing and personal development, supporting their self-expression and sense of identity.

    Governors, through the Governor Visit Plan and Subject Leader Reports, evaluate the work of the PE leader in ensuring that the quality of teaching and learning across the school is effective for all pupils. They ensure that pupils are ready for transition to secondary school and are equipped with the skills to flourish and succeed as caring individuals.
