The Dogs Trust defines a school dog as a dog that is

'…resident within the school each day, for the majority if not the whole of the school day'.

However, the school does not own the dog. The dog should belong to an owner and live with them – usually a member of school staff (at our school this is the Headteacher).

 

Following discussion with the Governing Body, we are pleased to let you know that the school has taken on a school dog. Her name is Maple and she is a Cocker Spaniel. She was born on the 30 March 2026, so she is four months old. Cocker Spaniels are easy to train and are exceptionally good at being with children of all ages. Maple will be in school for a few days between now and the summer holidays so that she can familiarise herself with the environment, and the noises!

From September 2026, pupils will be invited to take part in sessions with the dog. Animals can "bring comfort and happiness to people with a range of disabilities and emotional needs", according to Pets4Homes.

Maple has undergone the appropriate medical checks and training to work as a therapy dog in a school. When we return to school in September, all staff and pupils will undergo training to know how to interact safely with Maple. A copy of the agreed Dogs in Schools Policy can be found below along with the ‘Meet Maple’ poster that will be displayed around the school. Parental Consent

We must have parental consent in order for your child to interact with Maple. In July 2026, all parents were asked to complete a consent form. However, if we did not receive a response, we would have assumed that we have consent for your child to interact and have sessions with Maple. 

All children joining the school from September will be sent a consent form in their admission document pack. 

It is imperative that you let us know if you do not want your child/children to interact with or be around Maple.

You have the right to withdraw consent at any time. Please do so by emailing the school office so that we have your request to change permissions in writing.
