Staffing & CurriculumSt Alban's School has one class in each year group and children move to the next class in September of each year. The standard number for this school is 30 for our Reception class. All class teachers receive some support from a Teaching Assistant who assists with children who have been identified as having special educational needs as well as offering more general classroom support.
The National Curriculum
The National Curriculum consists of nine subjects plus Religious Education.
The core subjects are:
English, mathematics, science and information technology.
The other subjects called foundation subjects are:
Art, design technology, geography, history, music and physical education.
In addition Religious Education is taught. Parents do have the right to withdraw their children from Religious Education and Acts of worship. If you are considering doing this please contact the Headteacher.
There is statutory national testing at the end of Key Stage 2 (Year 6).
Each class has a period each day designated for literacy and mathematics as part of the National strategies for these subjects.
The curriculum is organised into manageable teaching units by identifying units of work which fall into two main categories - continuing and blocked.
Continuing work is drawn from a single subject or aspect of the curriculum which requires regular and frequent teaching to ensure progression and contains a progressive sequence of learning objectives, e.g. reading, spelling or number work.
Blocked work can be taught within a specific amount of time up to a term and focuses on a distinct body of knowledge, understanding and skills. It can be taught alone or be linked to other aspects of the curriculum e.g. our history topic on the Tudors in Year 4 includes work on art, music and English.
From September 2007, French language teaching will be introduced into the Key Stage 2 curriculum.
